Bankside area overview

Bankside, is a historical area of London, dating back to half a million years with archaeological findings. The first London bridge across river Thames was built almost two millennia ago. In 1750, Westminster Bridge was opened. Clink Street, still in its original form, is one of the oldest streets in London; was also the site of London’s first prison, built around 860 AD, owned by the Bishop of Winchester. References from this period are in current property addresses; ie. Clink Wharf, Winchester Stables and so forth.

Later, the area became a centre for iron founding, wire making, glass making and hat and leather manufacturing. In 1805, about 1500 tanners have worked in the area, evidence reflects in many of the current addresses, ie. Tanners Yard, Leathermarket Court, Tanners Street.

The river Thames an important international port and its docks and the spice warehouses of Shad Thames have always stood as the central of London’s stature and the area have been the essence of riverside loft living of many Londoners.

Modern property developers started developing the warehouses and period properties around Bermondsey Street Shad Thames and Clink Street some 25 years ago, the area has now become residential and the development continues even today. The next large scale regeneration in the area is Elephant and Castle, Bankside 123, the forthcoming Thameslink expansion and commercial projects such as the Shard of Glass.
